For the past 13 years the Japan Foundation has brought discerning cinemagoers the best Japan has to offer!  Grab your favorite Harajuku girl and head to one of our top picks for 2009…
THE CHEF OF THE SOUTH POLE
Based on a true story by Jun Nishimura of Japan’s 38th Antarctic Exploration, this film follows the daily lives of seven men stuck at the remotest place on Earth: Dome Fuji Station.  This uplifting film will leave you feeling optimistic about the world around you.
ALL AROUND US
This is the big trophy winner; 2008 Japan Academy Awards, Blue Ribbon Awards, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Film Festival and more. This “honest rendering of a married couple’s struggle with depression,”  is the tender heart of the festival, and has been touted as one of the best Japanese films of 2008.
DETROIT METAL CITY
This touching tale is about the difficulties pretending you are something you are not.  Young and gentle Negishi desperately wants to make people happy by singing Swedish pop with his acoustic guitar however he finds himself as the reluctant lead singer of a vulgar death metal band, Detroit Metal City.  As the metal band’s popularity rises Negishi is torn between himself and his alter-ego.
And don’t worry, with films this stimulating nothing gets lost in translation.
